The case for the ask

Raising money without a strategy behind it is asking harder, not asking smarter. Nonprofit Strategy and Fundraising is Joanna's own practice: feasibility studies, campaign counsel, and the moves that turn a case for support into gifts that actually close.

What it is

Nonprofit Strategy and Fundraising covers feasibility and planning studies, campaign counsel, major and mega gift strategy, moves management, board engagement, and fractional advancement leadership, delivered by Joanna Wasmuth, who has spent twenty-five years in nonprofit leadership and philanthropy counsel, running campaigns from $10 million to $300 million and raising more than $30 million a year. This is not advice delivered from outside the organization. Joanna works alongside your team and your board, on your actual campaign, until it is running on its own.

What you receive

Stage What lands What it settles
Read the readiness A feasibility study: whether the campaign target is realistic, and who is actually ready to give Whether to launch, resize the ask, or build readiness first, before a public campaign begins
Build the case A written case for support, and a campaign strategy naming the gifts that have to lead it What the campaign says, and to whom, before a single ask is made
Run the moves Major and mega gift strategy and moves management, gift by gift, prospect by prospect Who is asked, for how much, by whom, and when
Carry the board Board engagement and fractional advancement leadership alongside your own team Whether the board and the staff are carrying the campaign together, not one waiting on the other

What it needs from you

  • Access to your board, your major-gift prospects, and your development staff
  • Your current case for support and whatever donor-tier data already exists
  • Leadership time for the feasibility interviews and the strategy sessions that follow
  • A named person on your team who owns the campaign alongside Joanna

How it ends

This engagement does not end at a fixed point the way a Survey does. It runs alongside your campaign, from feasibility through the gifts that close it, with a written scope and a defined term set at the start. Where a Leadership Survey has not already run, we recommend one first, because a campaign strategy is only as sound as the direction underneath it.

Where it fits

Nonprofit Strategy and Fundraising is the Build rung of the Leadership area's Strategic planning lane: the campaign, run alongside your team rather than handed over as a document. It often follows a Leadership Survey. See How we work for the full Survey, Blueprint, and Build sequence, or the Leadership area for what else we look at here.
