The constraint is rarely the mission.

A nonprofit rarely stalls because the mission is wrong. It stalls because the board is informed rather than deciding, the fundraising plan sits apart from the strategy instead of underneath it, and the executive at the top is carrying more than the org chart admits. We read all three before we recommend anything.

What caps growth here

For a nonprofit, demand is donors and grantors, not customers, and the same problem shows up in a different shape: the right people are not arriving, or they arrive and never understand the case for support well enough to give again.

Strategic planning and the fundraising plan underneath it are too often built apart, one in a retreat and the other in a spreadsheet nobody in the room has seen. A campaign that has not been tested against real donor capacity and inclination is a hope, not a plan.

The board that only attends meetings is not the same as the board that carries something between them. We look at whether decisions actually move below the top, or whether most of them route through one executive who is carrying more than the org chart says, with no one named to carry the rest.
